Stroke Patient Advocate E-bookThe Stroke Recovery Advocate E-book is a guide for stroke patient advocates. If you've read The Patient From Hell by Stephen Schneider, you'll know how important a patient advocate is to someone facing the potentially long recovery period post-stroke. Whilst Stephen's story relates to recovery from cancer, the message that you need someone questioning and validating the treatment options, is relevant to stroke recovery. Generally, the medical profession is most interested in stabilising a patient post-stroke and providing some rehabilitation to get them to a degree of independence. At this point, it seems, they pat themselves on the back and mark the case as closed. In the normal scheme of events, patients are treated "by the numbers". Standard medications and standard therapies are applied. The standard procedures are in place and that's what is followed. There isn't much in the way of innovation. Nor are the boundaries pushed on what may make a significant difference. Our opinion is that if the medicos were the patient, they'd be expecting a lot more and certainly taking a lot more interest in the recovery process six months and more after the stroke.
